Dharan, December 26 The Surya Nepal Eastern Open is beginning here at the Nirvana Country Club Health & Golf Resort on Wednesday. A total of 60 golfers — 30 pros including six locals and 30 amateurs — will take part in the 54-hole competition, informed Nepal PGA. The fourth event of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2017-18 carries a purse of Rs 630,000. Top pros and amateur golfers of the country have already arrived in Dharan and are getting acclimatised to the playing conditions, said NPGA. The course, set in the midst of pine trees, is a piece of architecture and was laid by British Army officers. The course has been tweaked up for the tournament and is expected to test skills of the best players of the country, the NPGA release added. The top three pros after three rounds of golf will receive Rs 115,000, Rs 74,000 and Rs 53,000 respectively. Cut will be applied after second round and top 21 who make it to the final round will also get their share of cash prizes. Nepal No 1 pro and defending champion Shiva Ram Shrestha, who has already win two out of three previous events, is set to get a tough fight from second ranked Sanjay Lama, local favourite Bal Bhadra Rai, former winner and teaching pro in Germany Sabin Sapkota, who is here to participate in the tournament, and the winner of the previous event Bhuwan Nagarkoti and Army Club pro Dhana Thapa. Local pro Shiva Kumar Majhi is set to make his professional debut from the event. In amateur section, defending champion Sukra Bahadur Rai will be up against the likes of Tanka Bahadur Karki, Yubaraj Bhujel and Niraj Tamang among others. The tournament will conclude with the Pro-Am event on Saturday.
