Kathmandu, January 10 Amid tight security, hundreds of supporters of Dr Govinda KC, senior orthopaedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, organised a rally at Maithighar today, demanding his immediate release. Dr KC was arrested from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital on Sunday on contempt of court charge and was released today evening. Dr KC’s supporters also demanded resignation of the Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli. Nabaraj Subedi of Naya Shakti Party-Nepal condemning the arrest said, “The constitution has granted us the freedom of expression and assembly. If someone is arrested just for making a remark and fighting anomalies then we would all like to be sent to jail on contempt of court charge.” Tribhuvan University students also expressed solidarity with Dr KC. Shyam Babu Gautam, one of the students said, “It is the citizens of the country who make the law. People are supreme in a democracy and no law can be above their will.” The apex court had issued an arrest warrant against Dr KC for allegedly making contemptuous remarks against the Supreme Court and the chief justice.
