Bhaktapur, February 9 More than 5,000 households registered their names with National Reconstruction Authority as quake victims in Bhaktapur. Most of them received the first instalment of the housing grant provided by the government. However, only 801 households received the second instalment of the housing grant while 948 households had applied for the second tranche. According to Samjhana Manandhar, an engineer of National Reconstruction Authority in Bhaktapur Municipality, only a few victims have registered their names for the second instalment till date. She said, “Due to lack of land and problems in distribution of ancestral property, people are still not able to construct their houses.” In Bhaktapur Municipality, a total of 5,200 household received the first instalment of housing grant, but some 3,451 households are yet to receive the second tranche. Manandhar said, “Most of the victims haven’t started constructing their houses as they have already spent the first instalment to meet the other household expenses. Many of them are thus compelled to live in temporary shelters even almost three years after the devastating earthquakes.” Till date, 543 have applied for the third instalment while 400 have already received the last instalment of the housing grant after the completing construction work. NRA has extended the deadline to apply for the second instalment of the housing grant till April.
