Former parliamentarians’ role crucial: Prez

Kathmandu, February 12 President Bidhya Devi Bhandari has said that the role of former parliamentarians is very crucial for the country’s economic, social and political stability. Addressing a two-day national gathering organised here today by Former Members of Parliament Forum-Nepal, President Bhandari expressed confidence that the professional efficiency, experience and contribution of former legislators would duly be recognised. She also expressed the hope that the elected people’s representatives would be accountable to the country and people with the political transition coming to an end. On a different note, President Bhandari said democracy would be sustained only when there was prevalence of high economic growth rate, social justice and rule of law.  Also speaking on the occasion, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliament Affairs Yagya Bahadur Thapa said that fundamental human rights, free press and rule of law were the ornaments of democracy. Former Speaker Taranath Ranabhat expressed concern about the government’s reluctance to utilise the work experience and advice of former members of parliament. He suggested that the people’s representatives learn lessons from history to make the parliamentary system more dignified and creative. Forum Chairperson and former MP Omkar Prasad Shrestha lauded the role of former lawmakers in the establishment and restoration of democracy in Nepal. It has strength of 440 life members and 1,500 general members. ‘Peace, stability, democracy, good governance and prosperity’ is the slogan for the two-day gathering.
