Kathmandu, April 22 The Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police have rearrested a human trafficking convict, who walked free from prison after the Supreme Court ordered the government to release him on April 19. Superintendent of Police Jeevan Shrestha, CIB spokesperson, said Sun Bahadur Tamang, 50, of Dupcheshwor Rural Municipality-1, Nuwakot, was arrested from Sundhara the same day he was released. Tamang was elected ward chair of the rural municipality on Nepali Congress’ ticket. “He had been absconding after Nuwakot District Court convicted him in a human trafficking case and sentenced him to 37 years and six months in prison, along with a fine of Rs 250,000 on March 21, 2018. We arrested him to execute the court’s verdict,” SP Shrestha said. Tamang was produced before the Kathmandu District Court, which ordered the CIB to send him to Central Jail, Sundhara. A resident of erstwhile Ghyangpgedi VDC-5, Tamang had trafficked at least 37 women and girls to India and sold them to various brothels there in 2014. Tamang had lured the victims into going to India promising them a decent job and better life in New Delhi. Some of the victims were later able to escape the brothels and returned to Nepal to file a complaint against him at the CIB. Earlier, the apex court had issued a habeas corpus writ ordering the government to release Tamang, saying he was imprisoned on the basis of a mere assumption. The SC observed that his imprisonment in the human trafficking case was illegal because he was not the same ‘Sun Bahadur Tamang’ who was convicted and sentenced to six years in jail by Nuwakot District Court on December 12, 2011. According to the SC, the address and father’s name of ‘Sun Bahadur Tamang’ doing time in jail were different from the concerned convict. A police official said Tamang was arrested for implementation of the recent court verdict and it was not associated with the 2011 verdict.
