Heavy storm claims three lives in Tarai

Siraha, May 9 At least three persons died due to a huge storm that swept across different districts of the Tarai today. One person each died in Siraha, Dhanusha and Mahottari districts. Saguni Mahato, 77, of Mirchaiya, Siraha died after the storm occurred while she was answering  nature’s call in Ghurmi Khola near her house. Police said the elderly lost control during the storm and slipped and bumped into a stone. Similarly, Phul Badan Devi Mahara, 35, of Gaushala, Mahottari died after a tree branch broke and struck her while she was collecting firewood. Likewise, Dhikhi Das Tatma, 58, of Chhireshwor Municipality, Dhanusha, died after she was crushed when her house collapsed. Police said the storm blew away the roofs of houses and many houses collapsed in various places of Siraha. Many families were displaced due to the storm, said police. Power supply was obstructed after many poles collapsed in Lahan and Mirchaiya. Local farmers were sad after the storm destroyed seasonal crops along with fruits. The heavy storm has also blown away the roofs of houses, cowsheds and destroyed seasonal crops in Mahottari and Dhanusha. District Agriculture Development Offices said there was destruction due to the heavy storm.
