Rape accused sentenced to 10 years in prison

PHIDIM: The District Court, Panchthar has passed it verdict on a rape case on Sunday sentencing two rape accused youths to serve a 10 year jail-term. A single bench of District Judge Manoj Kumar KC took a decision to this effect against 18-year-old Jayandra Tamang and 19-year-old Samir Kerung of Phidim Municipality-1. Tamang and Kerung were accused of raping a 30 year old woman. The victim had registered an FIR on November 17, 2012 upon which the police took the proceedings to court and the accused were handed a combined sentence of 10 years under Civil Code’s rape and gang rape provisions, said Panchthar District Court Information Officer, Mohan Jawegu. Moreover, the convicts are also mandated to compensate a sum of Rs 20,000 each to the victim. The felon-duo were at large after the incident and police had arrested them in January.
