Kathmandu, June 10 Nepal Students Union, the student wing of the main opposition Nepali Congress today staged a protest rally against the hike in the prices of petroleum products, in Kathmandu. Hundreds of NSU cadres participated in the rally holding placards and shouting slogans. The rally began from Bhrikuti Mandap and converged at Shanti Batika, where NSU leaders addressed the participants. NSU leaders said the continuous hike in the prices of petroleum products would result in price hike of essential commodities, including food items. NSU president Nayan Singh Mahat said, “The government has hiked the prices of petroleum products five times in 100 days without thinking about the consequences.” Mahat demanded that the government immediately withdraw the decision to hike fuel prices or face dire consequences. He said the NSU would stage a torch rally on June 12 and burn effigy of the prime minister on June 14, if the government did not withdraw its decision. He also said that they would also resort to obstructing the movement of the prime minister and other ministers if the prices of petroleum products remained unchanged.
