KATHMANDU: Many Nepali Hindu women are observing Rishi Panchami, the last day of Teej, worshipping the Saptarshis -- the seven saints. The ancient seven sages -- Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadhwaja, Vishwamitra, Gauthama, Jamadagni and Vashishta -- are remembered for their deeds today. Primarily, women from the Khas-Arya group observe this festival. Bal Diwas being observed Likewise, Bal Diwas (Children's Day) is also being observed nationwide today. Bal Diwas is celebrated on Bhadra 29 according to the Nepali Calendar. Marking this day nationally began after Nepal signed the child rights agreement with the United Nations. Earlier, during the Shah regime in Nepal, Bal Diwas used to be observed on Bhadra 4 coinciding with the birthday of the then Queen Mother Ratna Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah. The day is marked by carrying out various programmes by government, individuals and institutions throughout the country.
