Kathmandu, October 13 Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya handed over a cheque worth Rs 50 million to the Kasthamandap Reconstruction Committee today. He expressed hope that the temple reconstruction work would start within the current fiscal. The temple was destroyed in the 2015 earthquakes. Even after more than three years of the earthquake, reconstruction of the temple has yet to start. Reconstruction of the temple could not be completed on time as the Department of Archaeology, Kathmandu Metropolitan City and the local community were at loggerheads over the modality, process and financing of its reconstruction. Its reconstruction was halted in 2016 after the Department of Archaeology started rebuilding it using modern materials, including steel, cement and concrete. KMC Mayor Shakya had taken initiative to form a powerful KRC in July to rebuild the temple. However, prior to the formation of KRC on May 13, Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Rabindra Adhikari had formally inaugurated the reconstruction work by performing Kshyama Puja, but the work has not started yet. Later on June 13, the mayor had also handed over a cheque worth five million rupees to the KRC. The committee is chaired by Province Assembly member from the area Rajesh Shakya and chairs of wards 19, 20, 23 and 24, along with cultural experts and a few locals as members. Speaking at a programme, Mayor Shakya said the reconstruction process would not be stopped as the entire community was working collectively. He also said they had started the process of acquiring wooden planks from Timber Corporation and traditional bricks from various vendors for reconstruction of the temple. A total of 13 heritage buildings and temples were destroyed and more than 37 such buildings were damaged in the 2015 earthquakes. Only three of the destroyed small temples have been rebuilt so far.
