KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security has urged one and all to mark the first Social Security Day as a celebration.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to announce the implementation of contribution-based social security programme across the nation on Tuesday and the government has decided to observe the same day as Social Security Day.

The programme aims to end the situation where workers are forced to return home empty-handed after long contribution to labour market.

With the enforcement of the programme, workers completing certain years of service will get pension based on their contribution.

Ministry's spokesperson, Narayan Regmi was quoted in Rastriya Samachar Samiti that he hoped enforcement of the programme would mark the beginning of a new era and create sustainable and professional atmosphere, healthy labour relations, and decent livelihood for citizens.

The programme covers health and medical facilities, safe motherhood, accident and physical incapacity security, security to dependent family members, and security at old age.

The Article 34 (2) of Nepal's Constitution has guaranteed that every labourer shall have the right to appropriate remuneration, facilities and contributory social security.
