Detainee consumes poison in custody, dies

Pokhara, March 1 A detainee, who consumed poison in the custody of District Police Office, Kaski, breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Kaski Sewa Hospital yesterday morning. Sandip Sah, aged 30, of India’s Motihari died in course of treatment at the hospital. Sah was arrested on the charge of drug smuggling on December 17, 2018. He had been remanded to police custody for further investigation. After Sah vomited at the police custody on Thursday morning, he was taken to Ramghat-based Kaski Sewa Hospital for treatment. Deputy Superintendent of Police Rabindra Gurung said, Sah had consumed poison in the police custody. “A police constable has been suspended on suspicion that he might have helped the detainee procure poison,” said DSP Gurung, adding, they were investigating the incident. DSP Gurung stated that inmates could be given medicine only against doctor’s prescription. The body has been kept at Western Regional Hospital, Pokhara, for autopsy. Drug Control Bureau Pokhara had taken Sah under control on December 17 last year. Police had recovered two sets of mobile and 2,970 ampoules of prescription drugs from Sah’s possession.
