MIDWAY: Celebrating the mind
MIDWAY: Celebrating the mind

It is small and delicate yet very, very powerful. In its very tiny size and fragility lies its enormous strength. The thing that I am referring to is the human mind.
If size were the measure of greatness then what would this miniature mind account for? Would it fare better than a mote of dust floating in the air? The fiery sun, the majestic moon, the twinkling stars, and the revolving planets are extremely large, great and mysterious. Powerful as they are, yet their power is no match to the greatness of the conscious mind. The greatness of everything else pales in front of the greatness of the mind. What a great thing the mind is? What awesome and mysterious power does it hold? The mind has created wonders. Imagine how far we have come from the barbarity of the Stone Age of our forefathers to this modern age of science and technology. Imagine with what power man has dissected, discovered, experimented, explored, and invented things. The wonders are aro-und us. Aren’t they simply mind-boggling? Doesn’t the mind possess mysterious and creative potentialities?
Mysteries abound the universe we inhibit. Our life is shrouded in mysteries. It is incredible that its size and fragility notwithstanding the human mind alone is gifted with the power to ponder, probe and analyse the mysteries of the unthinking universe. The mind alone can think on issues like creation, existence, life, death, holy, profane, soul, afterlife, God and anything else. Philosophers philoso-phise, writers write, scientists experiment and explore and engineers build because of the complex power of the mind. How small and fragile yet how powerful and subtle the human mind is.
What makes us humans? What would human beings be minus the mind? Would we be human beings at all? Without it we would fare no better than cows and sheep. Sans the mind we would be reduced to utter insignificance. Thanks to the mind for what we are today.
Human beings are placed just below God and above anything else in the universal order because the mind which he and only he is gifted with and not anything else is the measure of greatness. Let’s realise the boundless potentialities of the mind. Let’s put it to positive use and celebrate its greatness.
