PANCHTHAR: As the country is witnessing monsoon in its full swing, the torrential rain has triggered landslides and floods disrupting vehicular movements throughout Panchthar district. Vehicular movement along Ilam-Phidim road section of Mechi Highway has come to a halt since Friday evening after landslide debris buried the road. Boulders and rocks from the roadside hill rolled down and buried the road in Phalgunanda Rural Municipality. According to chief at Panchthar District Police Office (DPO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Narendra Kunwar, although the effort is on to clear the road, the incessant rain has made it difficult. Likewise, the traffic has been disrupted along Phidim-Yangnam road section due to landslides at more than a dozen places along Sidin-Yangnam section. Similarly, a landslide near Nawami Khola along Ektin-Memed road section that links district headquarters Phidim with Phalelung Rural Municipality in Phalelung-2 has obstructed the transportation. Phalelung-2 ward chair Sancha Kumar Kerung informed that the vehicular movement came to a halt after landslide debris fallen from 500 metres above buried the road. Meanwhile, the vehicle to and from Phidim are stranded due to the obstruction. Likewise, Ranke-Ravi and Tharpur-Chyangthapu road sections have also been obstructed. In a separate disaster, a 10-year-old went missing after he was swept away by a flooded river in Ravi area of Miklajung Rural Municipality-4 on Friday. Rai was a student at local Holy Child English School. The incident occurred while he was heading for school from home. The search is on for the missing student, police informed.
