Kathmandu, November 5 Medical Education Commission has invited applications for the post of director. Issuing a notice today, the committee formed to recommend names of director has asked interested candidates to send a personal statement not exceeding 500 words, along with curriculum vitae by November 7. The documents can be dropped at the National Planning Commission’s Education Secretariat or at Technical Education Department of Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. Vice-chairperson of the commission will appoint the director. The commission may form a three-member recommendation committee led by a member of the National Planning Commission to recommend names of candidates to the vice-chairperson for the appointment of the director. The recommendation committee includes a professor of the concerned subject and an expert as members. The recommendation committee shall have to recommend the names to the vice-chairperson within 15 days of taking charge of that committee. The recommendation committee shall recommend names of professors who have at least 15 years of experience or former government employees belonging to special class, for the post of the director. Term of office of the director will be four years and it may be renewed once. The government has appointed ten members in the commission yesterday. Earlier, the government had appointed senior orthopaedic consultant Shree Krishna Giri as vice-chairperson of the Medical Education Commission. The National Medical Education Act, which was passed by the House of Representatives on January 25, despite criticism from the opposition Nepali Congress and Dr Govinda KC, has a provision for forming the Medical Education Commission. Establishment of Medical Education Commission was one of the key demands of Dr KC, for which he staged 16 fast-unto-death strikes since July 2012. The commission is envisioned as an all powerful body for granting or revoking affiliation of medical colleges and for regulating the entire medical sector.
