Girl kills self as marriage turns sour

Kathmandu, July 28:

A woman today allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the iron rod of a water tank atop a house at Gairitol, Basundhara-3, Kathmandu.

Police said that Samjhana Shah, who married Laxmi Prakash Saxena two years ago, hanged herself to death early this morning.

Police, however, is not taking the case as a simple suicide although the police team recovered a suicide note written by Samjhana from the spot.

The case is mysterious and nothing can be said before the post-mortem report comes, said Keshav Adhikari, superintendent of police at the Valley Crime Investigation Branch (VCIB).

“The suicide note, which is blurred due to water drops, says she killed herself as she had to face too much hardship in the family,” Adhikari said.

When police reached the spot, there were already over a hundred locals gathered outside the house demanding that Laxmi Prakash Saxena’s father and mother be dragged around after smearing soot on their faces.

According to police, Samjhana had eloped with Saxena two years ago after a love affair between them. But after a few days of his marriage to Samjhana, Laxmi Prakash began staying elsewhere with another woman.

Locals said that the Saxena family started misbehaving with Samjhana as she came from a “middle-class family”. Locals claimed the Saxena family drove her to kill herself.

Five policemen and a dozen locals were injured when a clash erupted after police tried to rescue the Saxena family from being taken around with soot on their faces.

Dhak Bahadur Karki, Superintendent of Police at the Kathmandu District Police Office, said that Laxmi’s mother and his father Chandra Prakash have been taken into custody and are being interrogated.
