Biratnagar, August 15 :

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, in a meeting with security chiefs of the eastern region at his residence today, directed the latter to re-establish police stations and maintain law and order in the region.

Stating that law and order situation had worsened in the eastern region after police stations were merged with police office at the district headquarters, PM Koirala said he wanted to see improvement in security.

“The PM expressed serious concern over the law and order situation,” DIG of the eastern region, Keshav Baral, said. CDO of Morang, Modraj Dotel, said the PM was worried as paddy could not be planted in the eastern region owing to drought. Fields will remain barren and famine will hit the region if a special plan to enable farmers to plant paddy is not launched,” Dotel said.

Koirala also met party activists of Morang, Sunsari and Saptari districts in the afternoon.

“Koirala said at the meeting with party activists that unification of the NC and the NC (D) was his first priority,” chairman of the Morang chapter of the NC, Amrit Aryal, said. Koirala reportedly said the unification would take place soon. According to Aryal, Koirala will return to Kathmandu on August 18.
