Chhaya Devi Parajuli dies at 88

Kathmandu, August 26 :

Chhaya Devi Parajuli, 88, who had played an active role during Jana Andolan II, died today at 5.30 am in Bir Hospital, where she was undergoing treatment for the past five weeks.

The last rites of Parajuli were held at the Pashupatinath Aryaghat this afternoon, following a short procession in the capital.

Parajuli, who had survived scores of physical attacks by the police during the king’s direct rule, met with a traffic accident on July 21 in Bhaktapur and sustained leg injury.

Though neglected by the political leaders in earlier days, the government recently had decided to provide her with Rs 100,000 for treatment.

Parajuli’s body was kept at the Nepali Congress Central Office in Sanepa, where various political leaders paid her their last tributes.

Among those who paid homage to the aged fighter for democracy were Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Paudel, CPN-UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, Nepali Congress-Democratic president Sher Bahadur Deuba and others. Parajuli, who hailed from Sunsari district, had come to the capital during the Jana Andolan II. She is survived by two sons and two daughters.
