Rio De Janeiro, September 23 :
The Brazilian football federation has nominated legendary footballer Pele for the post of president of the 2014 World Cup organising committee, in case Brazil wins the right to host the competition.
“I will accept the Brazilian football federation’s proposal, as long as there are no unforeseen problems,” said Pele, after being nominated for the top post on Friday. He added that he would speak to his legal advisors about how leading the committee could affect his existing 20-year contract with a firm that bought the rights to his image.
Pele has headed the 1994 US World Cup organising committee. According to the rotation policy of the international football body FIFA, the 2014 version will be held in South America after the 2010 in Africa (South Africa).
The 2006 WC was held in Europe. Brazil has received support from all parts of South America but Colombia has also put itself forward as a candidate. Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will meet FIFA president Joseph Blatter next week to discuss the requirements to hold the biggest event in football.
