US wants fair CA polls

JANAKPUR: United Staes ambassador to Nepal James F Moriarty said on Thursday that the US wants a fair election to the constituent assembly.Speaking at a press conference here, Moriarty said there should be early management of weapons. “An interim constitution will be promulgated after the management of weapons. Thereafter, an interim government will be formed. So, there should be early management of weapons,” Moriarty, said. — HNS

Food poisoning

SARLAHI: One of the 13 invitees who had fallen sick after eating food in a wedding feast in Ishworpur VDC of Sarlahi district on Thursday died later in the afternoon undergoing treatment in the Narayani Sub-regional hospital Birgunj. Samikshya Upreti, 9, died of food poisoning after she ate food at a wedding party at Suraj Mainali’s house, said SP in the district police office, Madhav Raj Joshi. — HNS

Bandh affects life

JANAKPUR: Normal life was affected in Janakpur due to the Dhanusha bandh called by the Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (JTMM) on Thursday. Although major shops in Janakpur city remained closed, shops in inner areas of the city were open. Vehicles in long routes could not ply owing to some problems, the Janakpur Zonal Bus Entrepreneurs Association said. Government offices remained open and the railway service was also not affected. Government-owned industries also remained open. The bandh had been called to protest against the peace treaty signed between the government and the Maoists. – HNS

Decision on visa

KATHMANDU: The government decided on Thursday not to provide On-Arrival-Visa to common people who hold general passports. The visas will be issued only for diplomatic and government passport holders for African countries including Nigeria, Ghana and Zimbabwe from December 16, Home Ministry. — RSS

Maoists’ warning

DHANKUTA: Maoists on Thursday directed CPN-UML cadres to leave a village in Sankhuwasabha. The UML cadres, including the District Secretary Dambar Bahadur Khadka, had been campaigning for a democratic republic in the village. The Maoists asked Khadka not to campaign in the villages. They also threatened that he would be arrested if he did not follow their instructions, locals said. — RSS

RUPANDEHI: Acting Medical Superintendent of Lumbini Zonal Hospital, Dr KN Joshi, resigned on Thursday. “As tension mounted due to a dispute over the implementation of new economic and administrative regulations of the Hospital Development Committee (HDC) with the HDC staff association, I tendered my resignation to the Ministry of Health,” Dr Joshi said. RAJBIRAJ: Some locals of Kalyanpur -2 of Saptari district beat up Chandrawoti Devi of the same place on the charge of being a witch. Bhutidevi Chaudhari, her son Ramphal, daughter-in-law Lilam and Amal Devi severely beat up Chandrawoti Devi a week ago accusing her of “corrupting their joy by sending a ghost into the house’’. Chaudhari filed a case in the Area Police Office, Kadarbona, but as the police paid no heed to this matter, she filed a case in the Area Police Office, Kalyanpur, on Wednesday. —RSS.

Child commits suicide

SANGKHUWASABHA: A class five student of Singheswori School of Jaljala VDC committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree on Thursday. The boy, Ram Kumar Budhathoki of Madi Mulkharka VDC, was staying for studies at his brother-in-law’s house. The motive behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained. — RSS
