Rights teams in Lahan
ITAHARI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Joint United Nations High Commissioner teams on Sunday met with the families of those killed and injured in the Lahan incident. Verification ends
CHITWAN: The locking up of Maoists’ arms and verification of the PLA soldiers in the third division of the Maoist army camp in Chitwan concluded on Sunday. The verification of the PLA personnel and locking up of the weapons ended as per the agreement between the UN and the Maoists, commander of the PLA’s third division Bibidh said. The UN team had started its work on January 17. The weapons have been locked up in the containers with the names of the respective brigade or company, sources said. Stickers have also been pasted on each weapon to ascertain the details of the PLA personnel. — HNS
Damage in vandalism
GAUR: Property worth over one million rupees was destroyed in vandalism and arson of the Nepali Congress party office and houses of NC cadres here. At a press meet on Sunday, NC district committee office secretary, Shreeram Raya Yadav, said all the documents, telephone, cupboard, cycle, and furniture were set on fire by the protestors. — RSS
Poachers in custody
RATNANAGAR: Chitwan District Forest Office (DFO) has remanded four persons in custody. They were arrested from Sauraha Chowk on January 18. DFO Chitwan said a single bench of a forest officer remanded them into Chitwan jail. Those remanded custody included Sonam Chhiring of Kathmandu, Saraswati Thapaliya of Chitwan, and Parwati and Radha of Nuwakot. — RSS
KU lockout opposed
KAVRE: Staffers of the Kathmandu University (KU) have urged the authority concerned to unlock the KU central office. The KU staffers, saying that the padlocking has deprived them from carrying out their duty, issued a joint statement and urged the authority concerned to unlock the central office unconditionally and search for a solution of the problem under the parameters of the KU legal provision. — HNS
Memorandum to PM
ITAHARI: The Tharu Welfare Council Executive Committee, Sunsari, on Sunday sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala demanding amendment to the interim constitution 2063. The council sent the memorandum through chief district officer of Sunsari, Sharda Bhakta Poudel, demanding a federal state mechanism, inclusive democracy, guarantee of racial autonomy, proportionate election system. — HNS
Pahadi’s warning
Baglung: Civil society member and human rights activists today said that the ongoing violence in the Terai would escalate if existing political transition prolongs in the country. Speaking at a gathering organised by the Baglung chapter of Human Rights and Peace Society here, human rights activist Krishna Pahadi said: “As the king has become powerless after Jana Andolan II, the phase of transition should be ended to prevent any possible active role of the king.” — HNS
