ASMAN Mela on Saturday

KATHMANDU: Is every other Saturday boring for you? Here’s something to brighten your weekend — the ASMAN Mela to be held at St Xavier’s School grounds on March 17.

Stalls and entertainment for different age groups have been planned out meticulously so that no one feels bored. Says Srijana Singh Yonjan, who is the vice-president of ASMAN (Association fo St Mary’s Alumnae Nepal), “We have different stalls for children, youngsters and parents to make it an event which a family can enjoy together.”

So, children you can look forward to your very own play area, different contests like momo-eating and dancing, get your faces painted and generally have a really good time. And you will have an even better time if you know how to skate as there will be a skating rink just to help you enjoy yourself more. For the women, there’s stuff from makeup to household items — from bed linen to paintings to pottery... everything that you ever wanted for your home.

The highlight of the event is the ‘Dog Stunt Show’ where 17 Army do-gs will be performing different stunts at the event. So you will get to see brave dogs leaping through rings of fire. The show will go on for the entire day with breaks in between.

For our young crowd, the music fiesta begins after 2:00 pm. The artistes scheduled to perform are Nima Rumba, Nalina Chitrakar, Mingma Sherpa, Nirnaya da NSK, Saroj Dutta, Sugam Pokharel and Jabeek.

The food stalls will be catered by different restaurants and you will have a variety to choose from — “typical Newari to Oriental to just a selection of desserts”. And for those wanting to sit behind the wheels of a powerful vehicle, then there is the Subaru test drive.

All this fun is for a cause. “The mela’s proceeds will go to ASMAN Women’s Skill Development Fund,” says Yonjan, adding, “We are identifying more sectors and are focussing on education and health.”

So, what are you waiting for? Go enjoy yourself with the assurance you are having fun for something good. Fun starts at 10:00 am.
