MIDWAY: Delegating a responsibility

MIDWAY: Delegating a responsibility

By Uday Lama

Delegating is to hand over responsibilities to someone younger or a subordinate. It is incumbent upon a person of power to give some of it to one lower down in an organisation. This facilitates a smooth transfer of managerial and administrative functions. This handing over presumes trust and confidence in the individual who receives due authorisation.

It is a bid to decentralise at the helm and distribute duties to those who may hold key positions in the hierarchy. It also recognises the fact that no one is so great as to go overboard in corporate business.

That there is a need to partake some of it with lesser luminaries.

To delegate is not power sharing or brokering a deal. It is an official recognition that there could be minions who can command some respect in this regard. Thus instead of a concentration of power it is distributed on a person-to-person basis. Necessitating a change of guard at the official level or a promotion of staff to where they can do the most good.

Because of the de facto power of delegation it receives priority in meetings held under an authority who may discharge some or not all of the duties. To avoid confusion this may require going into details without sidelining the issues. Such that the recipient of this gesture expresses satisfaction over the transfer.

In the melee the delegation of responsibility may take second place. However, reviving old

issues and handing over papers could take centre stage. This is done in a quiet and discreet manner because so much is at stake. Not the least being the reputation of the staff to handle on-going discussions in an effective manner.

This entails response from the one who receives power and is in the line of duty to execute them in a proper and fair manner. Only when there is a possibility of this happening will there be a representation of policy.

Delegation of responsibility means dissemination of work load to a lower level and loosens the rigid set-up without being earth-shaking so that there is a smooth functioning at the lowermost echelon. Authority if designated to the lower tiers could provide relief and a breather at the top and pave the way for dialogue and an exchange of goodwill.
