Ron Archer dies
BRISBANE: Ron Archer, who played 19 cricket Tests for Australia before a knee injury ended his career at the age of 23, died on Sunday from lung cancer, family officials said on Monday. Archer, who played in three Ashes series — 1953, 1954-55 and 1956 when Australia lost all three — was 73. During a 1955 tour of the West Indies, Archer scored his only century — 128 in the final Test. — AP
Sarwan uncertain
HEADINGLEY: Ramnaresh Sarwan said it was still unclear how long he would be out of action with his injured right shoulder. West Indies will wait until after the Headingley Test to fully assess Sarwan’s chances of playing the remaining two Tests in the series. Sarwan hurt his AC joint when he dived to try to intercept a Paul Collingwood drive on Friday. — Agencies
Tendulkar pulls out
NEW DELHI: Sachin Tendulkar pulled out of next month’s Afro-Asia Cup one-day series being held in India. “Tendulkar has informed the Indian board and they have in turn told the Asian Cricket Council (ACC),” Asian team selector and former India opener Chetan Chauhan said on Monday. Compatriot Saurav Ganguly will replace him in the Asia squad for the three one-dayers against an Africa XI on June 6 in Bangalore and in Chennai on June 9 and 10. — Agencies
