Kathmandu, June 11:

A standing committee meeting of the CPN-UML held today decided to activate its party rank-and-file to campaign for the constituent assembly election slated for mid-December.

The meeting, chaired by general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, also said that the India visit of a UML delegation led by Nepal has been successful in renewing relations with the Indian leaders, standing committee member Bharat Mohan Adhikari said at the end of the meeting. The Indian leaders appreciated the UML’s role in the ongoing peace process, he said. Adhikari said that the party has also decided to back key demands of the National Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) and urged the government to meet their demands. The key demands of the NEFIN include full proportional representation based on ethnicity and state restructuring on regional and ethnic grounds.

The party has also decided to incorporate the UML agenda in the second amendment to the interim constitution, a bill of which has already been tabled at the parliament secretariat.

The meeting also decided to pass the bill related to Constituent Assembly Member Election, 2064 BS. The UML parliamentary party has issued a whip to its members to be present during the parliamentary meeting, which will be held to pass the bill.
