One escapee held; two, including guard, at large

Kathmandu, August 3:

Police nabbed Dhan Bahadur Tamang, one of the two detainees, who fled from custody of the Metropolitan Police Circle, Bouddha, in the morning, from the Sorhakhutte area.

Police had taken Tamang and Prithvi Mala into custody on the charge of murdering Surbir Shrestha at Siphal.

A police constable, Krishna Kumar Shrestha, who allegedly helped the two flee, is still at large. Earlier, a police official said, “Shrestha was on duty when the incident took place. When his shift was about to end, he asked other staffers to call another policeman to replace him, switched off the lights and let the detainees flee. Then Shrestha himself fled.”

The official said Shrestha had left his rifle, but had taken 10 cartridges of bullets with him. The Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office has formed a three-member committee headed by SP Ramchandra Dhakal to probe the incident.
