Kathmandu, August 27:

The Pokhara University Central Committee (PUCC) of the Nepal Students Union today furnished a weeklong ultimatum to the government demanding fulfillment of the 31-point charter of demands.

“We will be compelled to padlock the offices of the vice-chancellor and the Examination Controller if the government remains indifferent to our demands,” Subash Pokhrel, the president of the PUCC, told a press conference here today.

Pokhrel said the major positions in the university are vacant for the last 16 months and the government has not taken any step to appoint officials there.

He said the university is in a mess and that has affected the future of thousands of students enrolled in various faculties.

The student body has also demanded management of internship for all technical students, provision of Free Students Unions (FSU) in all colleges affiliated to Pokhara University and allocation of budget and necessary materials for the FSU and a month-long holiday for students to let them involve in the upcoming historic constituent assembly polls, among others.

Pokhrel said the existing five per cent scholarship should be increased to 15 per cent and that its distribution should be transparent and justified.

The students have also demanded short-term courses for the students for job placement in coordination with industries and other institutions, Public Service Commission and organising of regular interactions, seminars and meetings to make employers aware about the manpower produced by the university.

Pokhrel also demanded formation of a task force to sort out problems of different programmes of the University.
