Idol of all Nepalis
It was the most touching moment for me when Prashant Tamang during the grand finale of the popular Indian reality show “Indian Idol” didn’t hesitate to reveal his Nepali roots —
something even some Nepalis back home are reluctant to display .
However, the support that Tamang was able to garner from Nepali community just for being a Nepali was in itself amazing. Tamang’s victory is the victory of all Nepalis and he is not only an “Indian idol” but the idol of all the Nepali people.

NC unity
This refers to the news report “NC factions to finally unite today” (THT, Sept. 25). The unification of the Nepali Congress (NC) and NC-Democratic will definitely send a positive message. The failure of Congress unification has been thought of as one of the major stumbling blocks to NC taking a decisive stance on many critical issues. The merger has also created the right atmosphere for the upcoming CA polls, especially at a time when most of the parties remain divided.

Hold polls
Nepal is going through a period of trials and tribulations. The longstanding conflict has led to a massive destruction of lives and property which in turn has had a direct impact on the socio-economic condition of the country. But after a long period of suffering, Nepalis are now looking forward to electing a capable statesman who can bring permanent peace and progress to the country . The politicians in power must understand that Nepalis will not remain mute spectators if political parties continue squabbling and spoil the November 22 polls.

Privatise
If anybody should take the blame for power shortage in Nepal, it is the inefficient and incapable management of the of Nepal electricity Authority (NEA). Though there are other problems, the involvement of NEA personnel in massive power leakages throughout the country cannot be overlooked. Moreover, NEA has recently become a recruitment centre for the political parties. NEA can however reduce the leakages, which amounts to 25% of electricity produced in the country by having a strong mechanism to monitor power supply. To solve these problems, NEA must be privatised.Butwal Power Company and Chilime Hydropower Company are recent examples of private power companies which are
running profitably, besides producing electricity at lower cost.

Dire need
After Jana Andolan II, Nepalis were optimistic that a new Nepal would be built. It was also believed that the end of insurgency would herald peace in the country. But the recent spate of violence and government’s failure to contain it have again let the people down. Political squabbling among major parties in the government over petty issues and their unwillingness to compromise have made the situation worse. The country now needs a statesman who can bring all the parties together and restore peace.
