Kathmandu, October 28:

Nepali researcher Deepak Chamlagain has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geology under Marine and Environmental Science course by the University of Ryukyus, Japan, for his dissertation entitled as “Dynamic modelling of neotectonics and contemporary stress field in the India-Eurasia collision zone”.

Chamlagain, a resident of Shanishchare, Jhapa, has studied seismicity, neotectonics, stress field, and present day plate kinematics of the Himalayan-Tibet region using numerical modelling technique.

According to Chamlagain, due to collision between the Indian and Eurasian Plates, among the Himalayan intracrustal thrusts, the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) has been accumulating elastic stress during interseismic period to cause devastating earthquakes in this region.

His researches mainly conclude that the neotectonic stress field in the Himalaya is governed by the geometry of the MHT.
