RAUTAHAT: A group of about 15 people gunned down a dacoit, Upendra Patel, of Jethariya VDC-8, on Saturday. People were fed up with Patel, who was reportedly involved in a number of robberies. — HNS

‘Maoists’ shoot cop

CHITWAN: A group of suspected Maoists shot police constable Keshav Sapkota of the Bharatpur First Rifle Battalion on Saturday morning at Gondrang of Bharatpur municipality along the Mahendra Highway. Sapkota, 20, a resident of Bachauli VDC-6 of Chitwan was going to his home when the assailants shot him. — HNS

Ex-VDC chairman freed

BARA: Kidnappers freed Nawal Kishor Singh, the outgoing chairman of Pipradhi VDC of Bara on Friday evening. He was kidnapped from his own house some 10 days ago. Singh was elected VDC chairman from Nepal Sadbhwana Party. — HNS

One dies of cold wave

DAMAK: One person died of cold wave on Friday night in Jhapa district, it is reported. Raj Kumar Thapa, 28, of Arjundhara died of cold wave, Arjun Basnyat, a representative of the Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC) informed. His body was found at a local cannel at Charpane-1. Thapa had fallen into the cannel when he was drunk, Basnyat added. — HNS

DAMAK: Property worth Rs 1.5 million was gutted when the wooden houses of Ram Prasad Kharel and Tanka Dhakal of Damak-1 and shops in the locality caught fire. — RSS

Project in limbo

GORKHA: The construction of the Benighat-Arukhet green road, which began eight years ago, has come to a halt after German development agency, GTZ, pulled out of the project, citing insecurity. The GTZ had pledged Rs 140 million for the project. — RSS

INARUWA: A meeting of the bird festival organising main committee held on Saturday has decided to organise a four-day bird festival in the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve from February 2. — RSS
