Bista felicitated

KATHMANDU: Nepal National and International Players’ Association (NNIPA) felicitated Nepali taekwondo ace Deepak Bista on Wednesday. Bista was honoured for his remarkable achievement at the WTF Asian Qualifying Tournament in Vietnam where he won bronze medal, ensuring a ticket to 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bista is only the second Nepali player to qualify for the Olympics after Sangina Baidhya, also a taekwondo player. Baidhya had qualified for 2004 Athens Olympics. NNIPA president Rajeshwor Sthapit handed over Rs 20,001 and a letter of appreciation to Bista. Nepal South Korean coach Kwon Hyouk Joung was also feted on the occasion. — HNS

Inter-college football

LALITPUR: Hosts Nepal Commerce Campus (NCC) and K&K College advanced to the semi-finals of the Inter-college BBA Cup Running Shield Football Tournament on Wednesday. Hosts NCC edged out Kantipur College of Management and Information Technology (KCMIT) 4-2 in tie breaker thanks to two saves from goalkeeper Sailesh Bhattarai after a 3-3 deadlock in normal time. K&K beat College of Applied Business (CAB) 2-1 in another quarter-final. Bikash Manandhar, Sushant Parajuli and Kapil Thapa scored for NCC while Rajeev Shrestha struck twice and Nischal Lama added the other for KCMIT. Lopsang Lama and Santosh Gadtaula converted for K&K and Roshan Kumar Chaudhary replied for CAB in another match. — HNS

Handball tournament

KATHMANDU: Nepal Handball Association is organising the first National Inter-school Handball Tournament here at the Dasharath Stadium on 13-15. In all, six teams will vie for the championship, said the organisers here at the press meet on Wednesday. Two teams (Budhanilkantha and Jyoti Academy) will represent Central Region while Sagarmatha School of Udaypur (Eastern), Marigold of Kaski (Western), Sri Chandra Megalal (Mid-western) and Sarada School of Dhangadi (Far-western) will represent their respective regions. — HNS

School basketball

KATHMANDU: Defending champion Sri Diwa and Lyceum made it to the quarter-finals of the third Unique Inter-school Junior Boys Basketball Tournament on Wednesday. Krishna netted 11 points as Sri Diwa overcame Manjugoksha 28-23 and Lyceum sneaked past Motherland 11-10. Also entering to the last eight were Constellation and Galaxy. Constellation beat Deep Jyoti 17-6 and Galaxy defeated Shangrila 17-16. — HNS

Junior chess tourney

KATHMANDU: A two-member chess team on Wednesday left for Mumbai to participate in the Asian Junior Under-20 Chess Tournament. Krishna Kayastha will compete in the tournament slated for December 12-21. Bidur Prasad Gautam will accompany Kayastha to Mumbai as an official. SNB Memorial Cricket

LALITPUR: Budhanilkantha School and Little Angels’ School (LAS) entered the final of the fourth SNB Memorial Inter-school Cricket Tournament here on Wednesday. Budhanilkantha beat hosts Adarsha Vidhya Mandir (AVM) by 37 runs while LAS recorded a comprehensive 10-wicket victory over St Xavier’s in semi-finals. Budhanilkantha scored 92-9 in 20 overs and restricted AVM to 55 runs on 17.2 overs. Subrat Narsingh KC bowled a match-winning spell of 4-15 off four overs for Budhanilkantha. In another match, man of the match Amit Agrahari took 4-7 off three overs to dismiss St Xavier’s for 53 and LAS chased the total in nine overs wicket losing any wickets. — HNS
