London, February 24:

James McFadden converted an injury-time penalty kick to help Birmingham City draw with Arsenal 2-2 on Saturday in a game marred by Eduardo da Silva’s broken leg.

After McFadden’s free kick had given Birmingham the lead in the 28th minute at St Andrews, Theo Walcott scored twice in five minutes early in the second half.

But McFadden struck again in the fourth minute of injury time after Gael Clichy was judged to have brought down Stuart Parnaby. The Gunners’ lead atop the Premier League standings was also cut to three points from five after Manchester United’s 5-1 victory at Newcastle where Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo each scored twice.

Eduardo’s injury in the third minute overshadowed the Arsenal-Birmingham game. The Croatia international striker was fouled by Blues defender Martin Taylor who was immediately sent off for the challenge.

Manchester United added more woe to Newcastle with a 5-1 victory. Fernando Torres scored all three goals in Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over Middlesbrough. Liverpool climbed to fourth but are eight points behind third-place Chelsea. Portsmouth edged Sunderland 1-0, Wigan beat Derby 2-0 and Fulham tumbled 1-0 West Ham.

Spanish La Liga

MADRID: Luis Fabiano added to his Spanish league-leading goal total with two first-half scores in spearheading Sevilla past Zaragoza 5-0.

Seydou Keita’s score and own-goals from Zaragoza’s Roberto Ayala and Carlos Diogo completed the rout for Sevilla, who moved up to fifth with 39 points — two points behind Atletico Madrid for the final Champions League qualifying spot. Earlier, Carlos Martins scored in the 53rd minute for Recreativo Huelva to draw 1-1 at Valencia.

Real Madrid lead with 56 points, five ahead of Barcelona. Villarreal follow with 43 and Atletico 41.
