Kathmandu:
The pioneers in English language courses, American Language Center (ALC) celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Since 1968, they have been providing quality English courses and stand apart for the unique and practical way the classes are conducted.
“We have students who wish to go abroad for further studies and even professionals who come for our courses,” said Manish Kumar Agrawal, Director (ALC).
“We have a spacious place, good resources, trained professional teachers, curriculum that are well researched and regularly updated, good contact with publishers in the US,” he added.
Currently there are four native English teachers who are conducting the classes. According to Selina, Course co-ordinator/Teacher, “There is a continuous professional development with in-house trainings and regular observations of other teachers. The environment here is quite good so I guess that’s why even teachers prefer to stay here, there are good resources for us as well.”
Before joining, one has to sit for a Placement test and the level that a student should join is based on how the student performs in this test.
“Since students whose level of English is similar are kept together, it is easier for them too as they are not mish-mahsed and can be with others who are on the same level,” said Selina.
Saying it is a very practical approach they use, she says, “We have group work pair works, interactions and presentations from the students. We try to make the classes really interactive.”
She adds, “We encourage them to come early and have conversations with their friends, use available resources in the library.”
They have Basic, Intermediate and Advanced level for those who want to study English. Besides that they also provide professional courses like Professional Writing, Presentation skills, TOEFL, IELTS and others too.
They also have special courses for Ministry of Education, INGOs and various organisations at times. They also give counselling to those interested to go abroad for studies.
And as they are celebrating their 40th anniversary they have a special offer till February 27. All new students get 40 per cent off on admissions.
