CIAA to grill RCCC officials

Kathmandu, March 4:

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) today decided to summon chairman and members of the disbanded Royal Commission for Corruption Control (RCCC) to record their statements in a case that charges them with corruption and abuse of authority.

“We have decided to summon them within a few days,” a highly placed source at CIAA told this daily.

According to the source, the anti-graft body would question chairman of the RCCC Bhakta Bahadur Koirala and members Shambhu Prasad Khanal, Raghu Chandra Bahadur Singh, Hari Bahadur Chaudhari and Prem Bahadur Khati.

The CIAA decided to initiate the move to take action against the RCCC officials in a case based on the report of a judicial commission chaired by former judge Madhav Prasad Ojha.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had forwarded the Ojha commission’s report to CIAA a few months ago.

The CIAA has appointed joint attorneys Mohan Bahadur Karki, Durga Bandhu Pokhrel, Dilli Raman Acharya, Ram Kumar Acharya and DIGP Naresh Gurung to investigate into the issue.

The Ojha commission had suggested the government to prosecute the RCCC officials for misusing state treasury, as they had withdrawn salary as chairman and members of the unconstitutional body formed to harass democratic leaders during the King’s direct rule.

King Gyanendra had formed the controversial RCCC in order to take actions against democratic leaders on the charge of corruption after he seized power in 2005.

The Supreme Court had scrapped the RCCC on February 13, 2006.
