Tells them not to treat the case in an informal way

Kathmandu, April 2:

The Supreme Court (SC) today warned the lawyers representing alleged international serial killer Charles Gurumukh Sobhraj not to handle the case in an informal manner.

The bench also turned down a letter sent by Sobhraj’s French lawyer Isabelle Coutant Peyre in which she had accused the judges of delaying the case.

The bench warned the lawyers against involving in any informal communication in connection with any sub-judice case. The bench comprising Justices Min Bahadur Rayamajhi and Kalyan Shrestha criticised Sobhraj’s lawyers for their move and seriously objected to the letter before starting today’s hearing.

“This is not a way to handle a case,” Justice Rayamajhi warned the lawyers. “Does she (French lawyer Peyre) have the capacity to write to the court in such a manner?” he questioned.

Sobhraj’s lawyers, however, defended that she might have written the letter out of ignorance about the system of the SC. They also expressed ignorance about the letter.

“How can she write such unnecessary things without knowing facts?” Justice Shrestha asked and clarified that foreign lawyers are authorised only to assist Nepali lawyers. Writing a letter to the Chief Justice and the Speaker some months back, the French lawyer had accused the judges of delaying the case and of not being serious to dispense justice.
