Madrid, April 21:
Real Madrid extended their lead in the Spanish league to 10 points by beating Racing Santander 2-0 on Sunday. There are five rounds remaining in the league.
Raul Gonzalez used a delicate touch from inside the area to slice Robinho’s left cross under Racing goalkeeper Antonio Rodriguez in the 14th minute. Substitute Javier Balboa drew three defenders to the middle three minutes into injury time before passing to substitute Gonzalo Higuain, whose spinning shot from the left of the area carried under Rodriguez.
Madrid moved to 72 points in their race to win a record 31st league trophy. Villarreal are second with 62 points after beating Valladolid 2-0. FC Barcelona have 61 after drawing Espanyol 0-0 on Saturday. Atletico Madrid are fourth with 54, then Racing had 53 and Sevilla 51. Almeria improved to 48 after beating Sevilla 4-1 on Saturday.
Earlier, Nihat Kahveci scored and set up a goal for Villarreal. Nihat’s solo run in the 16th ended with his 15th goal of the season from inside the penalty area. Midfielder Santiago Cazorla scored in the 46th after a pass from Nihat.
Valencia failed to build on their Copa Del Rey trophy success. They lost 5-1 at Athletic Bilbao to sit only two points clear of relegation. Raul Albiol scored an own-goal to give Athletic an 18th-minute lead.
Fernando Llorente scored two goals with Andoni Iraola and Aritz Aduriz adding the others as Athletic overwhlemed Valencia in the second half to leave them 16th with 39 points. Valencia striker David Villa scored from a header in the 75th.
In Sunday’s other games, it was: Levante 3, Getafe 1; Osasuna 0, Deportivo La Coruna 1; and Murcia 1, Mallorca 4.
Italian Serie A
ROME: Inter Milan beat Torino 1-0 on Sunday and moved six points clear of AS Roma at the top of Serie A.
Julio Ricardo Cruz scored with a diving header off a corner in the 30th minute. If Inter beat Cagliari next week, the Nerazzurri can clinch the title with a win over city rival AC Milan on May 4.
Alessandro Del Piero and Kaka each scored hat-tricks in wins for Juventus and Milan, respectively. Del Piero tallied the final three goals in Juve’s 4-0 rout of Atalanta, and Kaka converted two penalties then added another goal in Milan’s 5-1 win over Reggina. Sampdoria shut out Udinese 3-0 with two goals from Claudio Bellucci. Fiorentina beat Palermo 1-0. Also, it was: Cagliari 2, Empoli 0; Catania 1, Lazio 0; Parma 1, Napoli 2; and Siena 0, Genoa 1. Inter lead with 78 points. Roma are next with 72, Juventus have 67 and Fiorentina 59. Milan and Sampdoria have 55 each.
