Another bus-plunge

BARDIYA: Six passengers were injured, when a bus plunged into Karnali River at Kothiyaghat on Wednesday morning. The bus heading to Bardiya’s Rajapur from Gulariya skidded off a temporary Pontoon bridge constructed over the river. Twenty-five passengers were rescued.

Nepalgunj: Police on Tuesday made public three persons who were arrested for committing robberies. Those held were Nanku Gole alias Jabbar Khan, 51, of Bulbuliya, Guddu Shai, 21, of India’s Rupaidiya and Sagar Barma, 22, of Nepalgunj. — HNS

Mishap toll reaches 45

LAMAHI: The Area Police Office Lamahi on Wednesday said the number of people killed in Monday’s bus accident near Bagahasota of Pyuthan district has reached 45. So far, relatives of the deceased have taken away 28 bodies while 16 victims are yet to be identified. Four bodies were identified on Wednesday. Most of the bodies kept at primary health centre in Lamahi are of Indian nationals, Dr Rajan Pandey of the centre said. — HNS

Theft hits telephony

CHANDRANIGAHAPUR: Telephone service has been disrupted in Rautahat’s Santapur and Dumariya VDCs for the last two weeks as a result of cable theft. People in these and the surrounding VDCs have been deprived of telecommunication as the 100 lines in the area have been rendered defunct. The cable along Birendra Highway was unearthed for the 21st time, local Bipin Gautam said. Amidst accusation of inaction, police said they have seized hundreds of metres of stolen cable. Chandranigahapur Telecom Chief, Manoj Jha, said police and the locals should keep vigil to stop the theft. — HNS

Gandharvas’ demand

Pokhara: Gandharvas, one of the Dalit communities living in Pokhara, have demanded their representation in the Constituent Assembly through nomination. A meeting of Gandharvas held in Pokhara yesterday demanded that the minority Gandharvas have been marginalised and are also on the verge of extinction and that their rights can be preserved only if they are directly involved in the constitution-making process, president of Nepal Gandharva Community Development Center, Kaski, Khem Bahadur Gandharva said. He also warned of protests across the country if their demand is not met. It is estimated that 1,200 of the 6,000 Gandharvas live in Pokhara . — HNS
