Crash landing

Mismanagement at Nepal Airlines Corporation has again come to the fore with Shell Oil Company’s refusal to refuel NAC’s Boeing 757 in Dubai. Why did the airline fly to Dubai when it had no fuel for the return trip, with a distinct possibility that Shell would refuse to refill it in light of the delayed payment of its dues? The state of NAC is getting from bad to worse as the cash-strapped government is increasingly hard put to foot NAC’s mounting bills. The two leased planes of NAC have already passed their retirement age. It might not be long before they are grounded at some international airport for safety reasons.

Check graft

It was long ago that Supreme Court Chief Justice Kedar Prasad Giri pointed out the absence of effective laws as the root cause of corruption in the courts. In this connection, the current

legislature should enact effective laws to stop all kinds of corruption in the judiciary and other agencies of the state. An immediate promulgation of laws providing for confiscation of properties of all the corrupt officials would immensely help control corruption at all levels.

At once

This is in reference to the news report “Constituent Assembly to elect PM on Friday” (THT, Aug 12). The failure of major political parties to forge a consensus and their reluctance to give up key portfolios has delayed the process of government formation. Now that the election of Prime Minister has been fixed for Friday, the debate over which party should hold key ministries should end very soon. In a parliamentary system, whoever is elected the Prime Minister has the sole authority to constitute his cabinet. The political leaders should stop delaying the process of government formation and start inter-party consultations about their roles and responsibilities in the new government. Moreover, they should concentrate on

solving the problems of common Nepalis.

Relief

Apropos of the news report “Bill on domestic violence tabled” (THT, Aug 12), the news comes as a relief to rural Nepali women subjected to domestic violence. Though the government had drafted a similar bill a decade ago, the bill failed to make it to the House owing to the lack of political will of past governments. Women have thus been subjected to all kinds of domestic violence.

I hope that CA will unanimously pass the bill to right the wrongs done to women.

Irresponsible

This refers to the news report “Youth Force, YCL cadres clash in Casino” (THT, Aug 12). It is surprising that while the CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist are making efforts to forge an alliance to form a new government, the cadres of their youth wings are busy fighting. Despite Prachanda’s frequent remarks that UML and the CPN-M share ideological closeness, they have often appeared as archrivals in politics. When the nation’s future hangs in balance, it is important that all Nepalis set aside their ideological differences for the greater good of the country.
