Itahari, August 14:

Ten persons were injured, one critically, when police rained batons on them in Inaruwa of Sunsari district last night.

According to an eyewitness, police swung into action when some locals tried to stop a police vehicle, taking it as a night bus. The vehicle was carrying a team of police personnel to Siraha district jail from Biratnagar-based Eastern Regional Police Office after yesterday’s jailbreak. The eyewitness said police baton-charged commoners in Bus Chowk after some passengers hurled stones at the vehicle.

Protesting the police action, youths closed marketplaces and government offices in Inaruwa throughout the day today. They also staged a demonstration in Bus Chowk of Inaruwa.
