Birgunj, September 19:

An unidentified person shot and killed Mohan Mainali, an officer at the Parsa District Administration Office, in Birgunj-12 today.

The person shot at Mainali, 50, while he was staying in a teashop near his house at Ranighat in Birgunj-12 and fled westwards, eyewitnesses said.

Critically injured Mainali died on the way to hospital, Inspector KP Sharma said. Mainali was working at the Citizenship Certificate and Goods section of the DAO.

Talking to the media over phone, SJTMM bureau secretariat member Sandeep owned up to the killing.

Security has been beefed up in Birgunj and adjoining areas. Over 24 suspects have been detained, Sharma added.

Meanwhile, a gang shot dead Pawan Yadav, 30, at his home in Pipraparpi-3 of Siraha yesterday. Yadav was shot in the head while he was sleeping in his house. The police nabbed Shyam Yadav of Pipraparpi-3 and Ram Saran Yadav of Harkatti-5 on Friday in connection with the murder.
