Lofty pledge to delink education from politics

Expressing commitment to keep the education sector free from politics, Minister for Education Renu Kumari Yadav said today the government would ensure the quality of education in the light of many students seeking higher studies abroad.
Inaugurating a three-day training on “Quality Assurance and Accreditation” organised by the University Grant Commission (UGC), Yadav said, “The country’s development depends on the skills and creativity of the people and quality education is a must for prosperity.”
“Excellent teachers play vital role to maintain quality of education. Therefore every individual has the responsibility to enhance the education sector,” Yadav said. The human resource produced within the country should be competent throughout the globe, she said.
The three-year programme to be launched by the UGC, with the financial assistance of the World Bank (WB), would help increase quality education, the minister said.
WB representative Rajendra Dhwoj Joshi said Nepal should work in a responsible manner to make the best use of the bank’s support.
Madhav Prasad Sharma, vice-chancellor (VC) of the Tribhuvan University, and Ram Abatar Yadav, VC of the Purbanchal University, stressed on the need to grant autonomy to the TU campuses in order to make them self-reliant and ensure quality of education.
At the programme, other speakers said the UGC, VCs and the colleges concerned should be serious about evaluating academic credibility of the respective institutions.
According to Subash Chandra Dhungel, administrative chief of the UGC, representatives from various universities and educationists across the country as well as from India have been participating in the training.
