KATHMANDU: The Dandapani Arjyal Memorial Centre, Nepal, has decided to award culture expert Satya Mohan Joshi with this year’s Dandapani Arjyal Memorial Award. The award carries a purse Rs 15,000 and a letter of appreciation. Last year, the award was provided to historian Dineshraj Pant. — HNS

Aid for peace project

KATHMANDU: The Royal Norwegian Embassy and the United Nations Development Programme

signed an agreement to provide an additional amount of $1.5 million for the continuation of the Quick Impact for Peace Support Initiative (QIPSI). The programme implemented by the Ministry of Local Development chains 11 eastern Tarai and nine mid- and far-western districts of Nepal to provide relief to the most disadvantaged communities through the implementation of basic community livelihood and other projects. — HNS

Gautam’s threat

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Bamdev Gautam on Wednesday warned that the government would use force against the armed groups in the Tarai if they did not come to the table of talks. He said the government had established link with 14 armed outfits in the Tarai and the eastern hills and the government’s talks team was preparing to start formal dialogue with them very soon. He was talking to journalists while laying the foundation stone of a building of immigration department at Kalikasthan. The Home Minister said the government would mobilise Nepal Police and Armed Police Force if the outfits ignored the talks offer. — HNS

Students’ warning

KATHMANDU: A meeting of eight students’ union on Wednesday warned the government of dire consequences if it failed to slash transport fares and implement the student discount promised earlier. The unions handed a memorandum to the Ministry of Labour and Transport Management, demanding the scientific adjustment in petroleum prices and transport fares

FNJ launches campaign

KATHMANDU: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) on Wednesday launched a nationwide campaign to press the political parties and the government begin the process for drafting a new constitution at the earliest. As a part of its campaign, it submitted a memorandum to CA chairman Subas Chandra Nembang on Wednesday. The campaign will last till November 30 during which the FNJ will hold open discussions on the importance of media’s role in drafting the constitution. — HNS

Shakya to head FEISCA

KATHMANDU: The general assembly of the Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia (FEISCA) held in Colombo on October 18 elected Er Kishor Shakya to the post of president for two years. A press release issued here on Wednesday by Nepal Engineers’ Association said NEA-Nepal, the Institution of Engineers (IE)-India, IE-Sri Lanka and IE-Bangladesh are the member organisations of FEISCA. — HNS

Pact for cultural exchange

KATHMANDU: Nepal Art Council and the Federation of Artistic and Cultural Organisation of Gwangju Metropolitan Government of Korea on Wednesday signed an agreement to exchange and promote cultural events between Nepal and Korea. On the occasion, CEO, KMC, Narayan Gopal Malego said the exchange of cultural events would help promote world peace and ties between the two countries. Kim Byoung-gyu of Gwangju Metropolitan Government expressed happiness at getting the opportunity to exchange cultural events between the two countries.
