Kirtipur, January 20:

Tribhuvan University, the country’s oldest university, that was shut indefinitely since January 1, is set to open tomorrow after the government’s pledge to provide security.

The TU administration had announced indefinite closure demanding security of physical, human and information resources of the university when TU Victims’ Struggle Committee started violent activities after a meeting between the two parties ended inconclusively on January 1.

Talking to The Himalayan Times, Prof Dr Madhav Prasad Sharma, Vice Chancellor, TU, said they decided to reopen the university after the government assured them of security.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal had directed TU officials last Saturday to open the university at the earliest. “Receiving the support from different sectors, student unions, civil society, intellectuals and other concerned, we have decided to resume regular activities of TU,” he said. He said, “The struggle committee must have realised that meeting their demands is beyond our reach.”

The TUVSC said it would continue with its protests. “We never wanted to halt academic activities at TU but the university shut itself,” it said.

the VC, Rector and Registrar tried

to enter the university, adding that they had informed the trio about the prohibition.
