Kathmandu, February 6:

Members of the CA’s Committee on Protection of National Interest today urged the security chiefs of Nepal Police, Armed Police Force (APF) and National Investigation Department to prepare a comprehensive concept on border security to be incorporated into the new constitution.

Chiefs of security bodies — Hem Bahadur Gurung, Bashu Dev Oli and Dhan Singh Karki, respectively — along with secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs Dr Govinda Prasad Kusum were called by the committee today to seek their views on the issue.

Secretary Dr Kusum said border security should be made the issue of public concern and underlined the need of a comprehensive study on the issue of border encroachment. He also informed that 64 police posts had been already established for effective border security.

“Controlling border crime, need for placing pillars in many areas and repairing dilapidated pillars are the current challenges to border security,” Dr Kusum added.

Inspector General of Nepal Police Hem Bahadur Gurung said there was a need for a strong legal provision for border security while committee member Motilal Dugad opined that border crime was increasing due to the lack of coordination among the security bodies of Nepal and India.

Meanwhile, Chandra Bahadur Thapa of Unified CPN-Maoist suggested the security bodies to carrying out their duties effectively to address the problem of border encroachment and crimes.
