Manx are powerfully built cats known for their unusual rabbit-like gait, known as “Manx hop”. The most noticeable feature of these cat breeds is presence of a very shortened tail or absence of a tail altogether. The overall impression these cats is that of roundness. Their well-balanced body is solidly muscled and compact with sturdy bone structure and broad chest. They are surprisingly heavy when lifted. Manx cats have a rounded head with prominent cheeks. Ears are medium, wide at base, widely spaced and have tapering to round tip. Their large, round eyes are set at slight angle toward nose. The eye colour depends upon the colour of the coat. Manx’s coat has a double quality with a short thick undercoat and a slightly longer overcoat. The double coat is short and dense with well-padded quality due to longer, open outer coat. The undercoat is close and cottony. The texture of guard hairs is somewhat hard and the appearance is glossy. Their legs are short and powerful, with the back legs being slightly longer than the front.
Manx cats make great household companions. They are active, and fun-loving cats that manage to express themselves very well without tails to swish around They are good with children and other animals and seem to be especially good with dogs. They form strong bonds with their chosen humans. They enjoy a good game of fetch and are fascinated by water. Manx are exceptional jumpers because of their powerful back legs.
