Delayed decision

This is in reference to the news report “PM reaches out to angry Tharus” (THT, March 8). Our ministers address problems only when it becomes too late. At the last hour our prime minister thought it wise to hold talks with the disgruntled groups and thanks to him very much indeed. I hope that the talks with the Tharu people will end fruitfully. The demand to make the Tarai belt an autonomous region is unrealistic. No decisions should be taken to fulfil demands in favour of one ethnic group that would hurt the sentiments of other ethnic groups in the same region. The present infrastructure of five development regions and fourteen zones covers all Nepalis. I believe that division of the country along communal lines will only lead the country towards disintegration.

Shocking

The announcement of fresh intake of combatants in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in contravention of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement is shocking. In his first public appearance in Kathmandu, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” had said that Nepal does not need more than twenty thousand soldiers in the national army. The present recruitment of combatants contradicts his words.

Other ways

Apropos of the news report “Far-western hilly district face effects of Tarai strike” (THT, March 10) it is very shocking that the food supply in the region has been hindered due to

continuous bandhs. I appeal to the agitators to understand the plight of the common people. The political parties and groups should seek alternative ways of making their voices heard in the government. On the other hand, the government needs to take strong measures to bring an end to Bandh culture.

Act now

This is in reference to the news report “Tharus’ stir impacts valley: Tarai bandh takes a toll on diet” (THT, March 9). Bandhs and strikes are taking place regardless of the radical political changes in the country. It is difficult to understand why our politicians are unable to address the grievances of the common masses.

Continuous bandhs in the Tarai has obstructed the regular supply of basic commodities in the valley. The government needs to find a solution to the Tarai crisis at the earliest.

Taxes

Tax is always a burden for the citizens. If it was made optional, most individuals would prefer ignoring it.

However, it is our duty as citizens to pay regular taxes. Regarding taxes for schools, I am against it! Why has the government shown hopes of free education, health etc? I support PABSON and NPABSON. Without the 5 per cent tax, the Government was running smoothly.

Instead of charging useless taxes, it would be much better if the Government reduced the existing taxes. Then, more would applaud the steps of finance minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai.
