NeBA put hold events

KATHMANDU: Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA) on Monday put hold all the remaining regional selection tournaments for the upcoming fifth National Games. The NeBA protest came following the arrest of its president Lama Tendi Sherpa on March 2 from Tri-Chandra Campus premises. “We condemn the arrest of our president and demand his immediate release,” said NeBA General Secretary Mahendra Man Shakya at a press meet. Shakya said that Sherpa was arrested without issuing a warrant and that all basketball activities will be put on hold until the president is released. — HNS

INDIAN WELLS: World No 1 Rafael Nadal crushed Scotland’s Andy Murray 6-1, 6-2 to win the Indian Wells Masters series title. Despite the defeat, world No 4 Murray leaves California closing in on world No 3 Novak Djokovic, whose title defence here ended with a quarter-final loss to American Andy Roddick. Russian fourth seed Vera Zvonareva won the women’s title, denying former world No 1 Ana Ivanovic a second-straight Indian Wells crown with a 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 victory. —AFP

West Indies triumph

GUYANA: Andrew Strauss hit his third one-day international hundred, but England still went down to a 21-run defeat against the West Indies on Sunday. The captain made 105 as England, chasing 265 for victory, were dismissed for 243 in 48.2 overs to allow West Indies to draw level at 1-1 in the five-match series. Shivnarine Chanderpaul made not out 112 for the hosts. England had won the opener here on Friday when West Indies coach John Dyson embarrassingly miscalculated the Duckworth-Lewis method and handed his opponents a one-run win. — AFP
