Kathmandu, April 9:
Vehicle Drivers are being checked at night for drinkdriving by the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) to prevent road accidents.
Currently the officers are using breathalyser, a device that estimates the alcohol levels in the blood from a breath sample.Sita Ram Hachhethu, in-charge of MTP, Koteshwor today said that the campaign has been launched to control accidents.
Talking to The Himalayan Times today, he said that most accidents that take place at night are due to drunken driving.
He said, “Night time road accidents are more dangerous than day time,” adding, “During day time, the vehicle riders are safe but they may die during night time
due to the negligence of drivers and the use of alcohol.”
He caught 16 people driving their vehicle after having alcohol at Baneshwor in one hour last night.
“Usually, we fine them Rs 200, if they are caught for the first time and Rs 1050 for the next time,” he said, currently they have around 15 breathalyzers.
