DHARAN: District Police Office, Sunsari, on Monday arrested police inspector Gopal Giri, chief of Area Police Office Dharan, on the charge of raping a girl. Nabin Gurung, the girl's maternal uncle, said Giri had raped his niece at his house in BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences after making her drink liquor on Sunday night. Gurung said his niece was found at Giri's residence in an unconscious state this morning. The girl had been missing since Sunday evening. Giri was arrested after Gurung called a press conference and publicised the incident. The police also arrested Indu Rai of Dharan in connection with the incident, Sunsari SP Rajendraman Shrestha said. Rai has been accused of sending the girl to Giri. Shrestha said departmental action would be taken against Giri. Meanwhile, Giri refuted the charge and said he had given shelter to the girl and Rai, who had come to his residence under the influence of alcohol. Giri had been transferred to Area Police Office Dharan from Aaiselukharka Area Police Office, Khotang, four months ago.
