Illogical demands Apropos of the article “‘One Madhesh, one Pradesh’ falters on representation” (THT, April 27), the concept is ambiguous in itself. The demand raised by TMDP and MJF seems to be illusive and will never be attained. It should be noted here that the Maoist-rebels raised voice for the recognition and identity of ethnic groups living in the tarai, but didn’t perceive the whole tarai belt as a single province. To materialize this demand, supporting voices in the parliament have been raised repeatedly from concerned parties disrupting the statute drafting process. However, the leaders demanding this have no solid ground on which the infrastructure of a single state will be developed. In reality they also know that the demand has no analytical base. Instead, they are using it as a weapon. As the tarai is homeland for people of different ethnic groups, we simply can’t ignore the fact that a row between Maithili, Bhojpuri, Awadhi, Tharu and Nepali speaking people will arise regarding the issues like race, politics, economy, culture and social and so on. Hydel plants The effects of global warming appears to already affecting various parts of the globe including Nepal. Lack of adequate amount of rainfall is also attributed to this phenomenon of global warming. Because of this, agriculture dependent on rainfall is being adversely affected and we could face shortage of foodgrain. Just what the concerned authorities are doing about global warming is a matter of curiosity. Everyone in this planet can contribute to mitigate global warming by burning less fossil fuel. In Nepal’s context, the tapping of the vast hydroelectricity potential could be the answer. Dipal Shah, via e-mail Cooperation This is with reference to the news report “Rampant violation of traffic rules” (THT, April 28). What has been referred to in the news is what can be observed by anyone. The buses are crowded beyond capacity, the vehicles don’t care about the zebra crossing, parking at will is widespread. Overall, there is no adherence to the traffic rules that are designed for the safety of the vehicle drivers as well as the pedestrians. Taking action against a few drivers has not solved the problem. It calls for ways to deal with the drivers in a different way. If only there was cooperation between the traffic police and the drivers, things could change in making the roads safer. It should be borne in mind that the rapid increase in the number of two and four wheelers have also posed a problem in managing the traffic in the Kathmandu Valley. Sukirti Sharma via e-mail
Urgency “Teachers’ union to take to streets” (THT, April 28) reflects a very unfortunate picture. The teachers want their demands to be fulfilled by the government. The Ministry of Education with which the union had inked an agreement ought to come up with what progress has been made as regards the demands. It is sad that the government goes on making agreements but there is no follow up. This is the reason why the teachers are agitated. The government should look into the agreement and immediately fulfill the teachers’ demands otherwise their protest program will play havoc with the academic activities in the schools. This is a matter to be very concerned about. Rajeeb K.C. via e-mail
Clarification Serious attention of the Nepal Television Programme Division has been drawn towards the news “Nepal TV in line of NEMA, media bodies’ fire” (THT, April 26) and “Journalists, lawyers condemn Nepal TV” (THT, April 27). Nepal Television has not signed any agreement with the organization named NEMA, as stated in the news. This is to clarify that Nepal Television had signed an agreement with Gangadeep Films Advertising Agency for the talk-show Nirwachan Pranali Sudhar which was being regularly broadcast but as a programme contrary to the agreement arrived for Friday 9:30 p.m. slot, another programme had to be aired, and unlike the misleading news that was published in the daily. Also, we would like to inform that NTV has no intention of suppressing the freedom of expression of any one or impose censorship on any programme. Programme Division, NTV
